Story of Rebecca from South Australia

58 yr old woman. Moved 30 times with my two daughters. I was once in a corrupt housing cooperative and I had to go to court as a whistleblower with impending eviction. The judge said “homelessness is not hardship”. My daughters are both well educated and doing well now. I have less than 10 000 in super and I’m on Centrelink due to stress leave. I am a trauma counsellor and have been working in remote areas and at sea. I have returned to be near aging parents. I currently rent a room for 300 a week cash, house sharing with two others. This landlord only takes cash. She has several houses. Her partner takes cash only in his properties too. I have other friends also paying cash. Insecure housing numbers do not reflect this. Mutual obligation is a ridiculous pressure and we all feel only one payment away from living in cars. It is so stressful. Lonely too.
